In the fall of 2017, the life of 15-year-old George Akins Jr. was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. A sophomore at Windsor Forest High School, where he was a running back and linebacker on the football team, Akins was known for his infectious smile and dedicated work ethic. On the evening of Saturday, October 21, 2017, just a day after playing in a victorious game, Akins was waiting for his parents to pick him up outside a McDonald's near the Savannah Mall.
An argument that had broken out between two groups escalated into a violent confrontation. During the altercation, gunfire erupted, and Akins was fatally struck. Another 15-year-old Windsor Forest football player was also wounded in the shooting. The news of the shooting sent shockwaves through the community, particularly among his teammates and coaches who remembered him as a positive and beloved individual.
Within days, the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department made an arrest in connection with the homicide. The suspect was identified as 16-year-old Jeffery Burton. Authorities announced that Burton would be tried as an adult for his alleged role in the shooting. In November 2017, a Chatham County grand jury indicted Burton on charges of malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault.
The legal proceedings that followed revealed complexities in the case. A significant development occurred when a trial court suppressed custodial statements Burton had made to law enforcement during a video-taped interview following his arrest. The Georgia Supreme Court later upheld this decision, affirming that the state had not sufficiently demonstrated that the then-16-year-old had knowingly and voluntarily waived his Miranda rights.
