In the afternoon of January 21, 2018, 24-year-old Balil Whitfield was discovered inside a vehicle on the 2100 block of Hudson Street in Savannah, Georgia. He had sustained fatal gunshot wounds in what was being investigated as a homicide.
The investigation into Whitfield's death quickly led authorities to a suspect, 20-year-old Ricky Jerome Boyd. Two days after the discovery of Whitfield's body, on the morning of January 23, 2018, members of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department arrived at a residence on Marian Circle to serve an arrest warrant on Boyd for his alleged connection to the murder. After other occupants exited the house, Boyd emerged and was confronted by officers. Authorities stated that Boyd was holding what appeared to be a firearm, which was later identified as a CO2-powered BB air gun. According to law enforcement, Boyd did not comply with verbal commands and raised the air gun toward the officers, prompting several officers to fire their weapons. Boyd was struck by the gunfire and died after being transported to a hospital. A Savannah-Chatham Metro Police sergeant was also struck by gunfire during the incident but was treated and released.
A Chatham County grand jury later heard testimony regarding Boyd's alleged involvement in Balil Whitfield's murder and concluded there was 'substantial credible evidence' linking him to the crime. Evidence presented included the recovery of Boyd's cell phone at the scene and a statement from Boyd's mother to a detective that he had admitted his participation in the murder to his father. Additionally, an individual named Armond Green identified Boyd as being in the backseat of Whitfield's car at the time of the shooting. However, conflicting information later emerged, as Boyd's mother, Jameillah Smiley, publicly stated that a Savannah detective had told her they did not believe her son was responsible for Whitfield's death. This has left some questions surrounding the case unresolved. Further violence tragically followed these events when a 12-year-old boy was fatally shot at Ricky Boyd's funeral. A 15-year-old was later arrested and charged in connection with that shooting, which police did not believe was in retaliation for Whitfield's death.
