In the late summer of 2023, the city of Savannah, Georgia, was rocked by a violent act that claimed the lives of two men. On August 9th, 32-year-old Eric Townsend Jr. was fatally shot at the Fenwick Village Apartments. Another man, 27-year-old Robert Johnson, also lost his life in the incident. The event that unfolded was not a random act of violence but a deadly armed robbery that cut short the lives of two individuals.
The Chatham County Police Department launched an immediate
investigation into the double homicide, which led to the swift arrest of three suspects. Twenty-two-year-old Roland Heyward, 23-year-old Akilee Wilson, and 27-year-old Albert Mack were taken into custody and charged with murder and armed robbery. The investigation didn't stop there, as two more individuals, Ruben Hughes and Raquan Williams, were also indicted in connection with the killings. The indictment revealed that the five men were allegedly attempting to purchase marijuana when the fatal shootings occurred.
The legal process brought the case against the five men to a conclusion. Following a two-week trial, a Chatham County jury found Roland Heyward, Akilee Wilson, and Albert Mack guilty on all charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and armed robbery. Their sentencing was scheduled for a later date. The remaining two men involved, Ruben Hughes and Raquan Williams, entered guilty pleas for their roles in the shooting. The passing of Eric Townsend Jr. left a significant void in the lives of his family and friends. He was survived by his parents, four brothers, and a sister. His funeral service was held on August 25, 2023, at the Jesus First Community Church in Garden City, Georgia, followed by his interment at Greenwich Cemetery.
