In the winter of 2023, the life of 20-year-old Omarion Ke'Andre Whitfield was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. On the evening of Monday, December 4, 2023, Whitfield, a beloved son, grandson, and brother known to his loved ones as 'Dre,' was fatally shot. He was not alone in this tragedy; 16-year-old Semaj Floyd also lost his life in the same incident, a grim marker of the gun violence that affects communities.
Raised in the Cann Park neighborhood of Savannah, Whitfield was a
familiar and friendly face. He had attended Hodge Elementary, Derenne Middle School, and Beach High School, and was known for his love of video games, particularly Fortnite, and for the laughter and joy he brought to his family, especially his seven younger siblings and many cousins. He had dreams of traveling, with California and New York City being places he longed to visit.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the indictment of three young men: 19-year-old VZ Coleman, 20-year-old Harold Robertson, and Joshua Reic. All three were reportedly out on bond for previous offenses at the time of the fatal shooting. The charges brought against them were severe, including two counts of felony murder for each. Coleman and Robertson also faced additional charges of aggravated assault. The news of the indictments brought a measure of progress for the grieving families, though the legal process was just beginning.
