In the warm evening hours of June 12, 2022, a pool party at the High Pointe apartment complex on Beacon Parkway East in Birmingham, Alabama, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 24-year-old Frankie Keonta McDonald. The gathering, filled with the sounds of summer, was shattered by the eruption of gunfire around 10:30 p.m., leaving chaos and tragedy in its wake.
According to reports, a confrontation broke out between a resident and some of the partygoers, escalating to
a fatal degree. When Birmingham police officers arrived at the chaotic scene, they heard multiple gunshots and saw people fleeing from the pool area. In the parking lot, they discovered several individuals attempting to render aid to McDonald, who had been shot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Two other individuals, a 17-year-old and a 21-year-old, were also wounded in the shooting and transported to the hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led police to a nearby apartment where they located and apprehended a suspect. Jessica Threatt, a 38-year-old woman from Birmingham, was arrested in connection with the incident. She was subsequently charged with one count of murder for the death of Frankie McDonald and two counts of attempted murder for the injuries sustained by the other two victims. Threatt was booked into the Jefferson County Jail, with her bond set at over $1.6 million. During the course of the incident, a police officer discharged their weapon, but no one was injured as a result of the officer's gunfire. The Birmingham Police Department's Internal Affairs Division opened an investigation into the officer's use of force, which is standard procedure.
