John Arthur Burkus, a 31-year-old man, was enjoying a walk with his dog along the Phenix City Riverwalk in Alabama on a Saturday afternoon when his life was tragically cut short. It was December 3, 2022, when Burkus, an avid outdoorsman, inadvertently stumbled upon a shooting in progress. In an act of senseless violence, he was fatally shot, becoming an innocent victim in a double homicide. The other man killed was identified as 40-year-old Darrelyn Harris.
Both men were from the nearby city of Columbus, Georgia. The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. along the Chattahoochee River, just north of the Troy University campus.
The Phenix City Police Department immediately launched an investigation, seeking the public's help in identifying a person of interest seen in the area at the time of the killings. This individual was described as a Black man. Investigators released surveillance footage showing a person of interest walking towards the Riverwalk, which proved to be a critical clue. The suspect's own mother recognized his distinct walk in the video and contacted the authorities. This, along with testimony from two other witnesses who saw a man in the same teal pullover at the scene, led police to identify Damon Daniels Jr. as the primary suspect.
Just under a week after the tragic shooting, on December 9, 2022, 29-year-old Damon Daniels Jr. was arrested in Columbus, Georgia, by a team of law enforcement officers from multiple agencies. He was taken into custody without incident and faced extradition to Alabama. Daniels has since been charged with capital murder for the deaths of both Burkus and Harris. During extensive interviews with investigators, Daniels initially denied being in Phenix City on the day of the murders. He later changed his story, claiming he was a witness before ultimately admitting to shooting both men, alleging it was in self-defense after taking methamphetamine. The state of Alabama is seeking the death penalty in this case. It was also revealed that Daniels had a prior criminal history, having previously been charged with murder in a separate case in 2017, which was later reduced to manslaughter in a plea deal.
