On a bright Saturday afternoon, the tranquility of the Phenix City Riverwalk was shattered by gunfire. It was December 3, 2022, at approximately 2:30 p.m., when 40-year-old Darren Darrlyn Tremaine Harris, a Black male, was fatally shot in a brazen daylight attack. The incident also claimed the life of 32-year-old John Arthur Burkus, turning a peaceful public space into a scene of a double homicide.
Witnesses reported seeing Harris being shot from the 14th Street Walking Bridge before more shots rang out.
The investigation into the shocking crime quickly gained momentum as Phenix City Police released surveillance footage of a person of interest walking towards the Riverwalk. A critical breakthrough came when the suspect's own mother recognized him in the video due to his distinctive gait and contacted the authorities. This led to the arrest of 29-year-old Damon Daniels Jr. in connection with the murders. The case against Daniels was built on the accounts of two additional witnesses who placed an individual matching his description at the scene, wearing the same teal pullover seen in the surveillance video.
During a total of 12 hours of interviews with investigators following his arrest, Daniels' account of the events of that day shifted dramatically. Initially, he denied even being in Phenix City on December 3rd. He later altered his story, claiming to have been a witness to the killings. Ultimately, he admitted to the shootings but asserted that he acted in self-defense. Daniels told investigators he had taken methamphetamine that morning, which made him paranoid and 'not his normal self.' He offered to provide a written statement to this effect but never did. An autopsy revealed that Harris was shot eight to nine times, while Burkus sustained six gunshot wounds.
Damon Daniels Jr. was subsequently charged with capital murder. In a court appearance on January 17, 2023, two investigators from the Phenix City Police Department testified, outlining the progression of Daniels' statements. Following this preliminary hearing, a judge ruled that Daniels would be held without bond. Prosecutors have announced their intention to seek the death penalty in the case. Darren Harris's mother has expressed her support for this decision, stating that since her son and the other victim cannot return, the accused should not be allowed to 'breathe another breath.'
