On a bright Saturday afternoon, the tranquility of the Phenix City Riverwalk was shattered by gunfire. It was December 3, 2022, at approximately 2:30 p.m., when 40-year-old Darren Darrlyn Tremaine Harris, a Black male, was fatally shot in a brazen daylight attack. The incident also claimed the life of 32-year-old John Arthur Burkus, turning a peaceful public space into a scene of a double homicide.
