On August 27, 2023, 18-year-old Phenix City resident Darius Underwood was shot in an incident that occurred within the city. Following the shooting, Underwood was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was pronounced dead on August 28 at 11:36 a.m. The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound. His body was subsequently sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Montgomery for an autopsy.
