On May 13, 2022, 39-year-old Edward Pettway of Montgomery, Alabama, was fatally shot in Phenix City. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Piggly Wiggly on 13th Street. Pettway was in his vehicle when he was shot. Despite his injuries, he managed to drive himself nearly three miles to Jack Hughston Hospital, where he was employed as a supervisor. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
