On the evening of May 21, 2007, 18-year-old John Peter Lima, a Black/African American male, was driving in his hometown of Brockton, Massachusetts, with a friend in the passenger seat. The night took a fatal turn when another vehicle began aggressively tailgating them with its high beams on. In a moment of frustration, Lima tapped his brakes in response. The other car then pulled up alongside Lima's vehicle, and an occupant opened fire, unleashing a barrage of seven or eight gunshots.
