On the morning of January 21, 2010, in Brockton, Massachusetts, the lives of a brother and sister were brought to a violent and tragic end. Jorge DePina, a 30-year-old Black male of Cape Verdean descent, was fatally shot while he slept in his bed in a second-floor apartment on Nilsson Street. His sister, Maria DePina, was also killed in the brutal attack. The shocking discovery was made after police responded to the residence at approximately 9:16 a.m., finding a grim scene that would deeply affect the local community.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to John V. Monteiro of Rhode Island. The probe revealed that Monteiro had forcibly entered the DePina's apartment. He first shot Jorge multiple times in the head, neck, and torso as he lay sleeping. Maria, awakened by the commotion, encountered Monteiro in the hallway. As she tried to escape, Monteiro shot her in the back of the head. This senseless act of violence left a family decimated and a community in shock.
The case against John V. Monteiro was built on thorough police work. A significant breakthrough came when investigators learned that Monteiro had sold the firearm used in the murders to an informant working with the FBI. Ballistics and DNA testing confirmed that the gun sold by Monteiro was indeed the weapon used to kill Jorge and Maria DePina. After a seven-day trial, a jury found John V.
