On January 13, 2018, David J. Carroll, a 42-year-old resident of Brockton, Massachusetts, lost his life in a shooting incident outside Dylan's Pub and Grille, located at 789 Centre Street in Brockton. The incident occurred at approximately 2:02 AM, when Brockton Police received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting. Upon arrival, police and emergency medical personnel found Carroll suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite lifesaving efforts, Carroll was transported to Brockton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Carroll's death was conducted jointly by the Brockton Police and State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office. The inquiry revealed that an altercation had occurred in the parking lot of Dylan's Pub and Grille prior to the shooting. Surveillance video and witness interviews indicated that the altercation involved Carroll and several other individuals. Further investigation led to the identification of two suspects: Antonio Pedro Fontes and Jose Oliveira, both residents of Brockton.
Antonio Pedro Fontes, born on June 27, 1982, was indicted for Murder, Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Loaded Firearm, and Discharge of a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building. An arrest warrant was issued for Fontes in connection with these charges. Jose Oliveira, born on March 11, 1981, was indicted for Accessory After the Fact to Murder, Possession of a Firearm, and Accessory After the Fact to Possession of a Firearm. Oliveira was to be summonsed for arraignment on the indictments at a later date.
The investigation suggested that the shooting was a result of the altercation that escalated in the parking lot. Witnesses reported that the fight had started inside the pub and continued outside, where the fatal shots were fired. The detailed investigation and evidence collected led to the indictment of Fontes and Oliveira, highlighting their roles in the tragic event.
David J. Carroll, known affectionately as 'Pupa,' was a lifelong resident of Brockton, born in Stoughton. He was a 1993 graduate of Brockton High School and had been involved in various entrepreneurial endeavors. Carroll was remembered for his loyalty to his family and friends, his love for cooking, and his active presence on social media. His death was deeply felt by the community, and he is survived by his parents, a brother, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
