In the early morning hours of October 5, 2014, the life of 34-year-old Helmae Zewdu, a Black male from Brockton, Massachusetts, was tragically cut short. Zewdu was discovered on Eagle Avenue in Brockton at approximately 2:27 a.m., having been fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Zewdu's death led authorities to 25-year-old Michael Starks.
Evidence connected Starks to the murder through a ballistics match from another shooting that occurred just hours before Zewdu was killed. In that earlier incident, Starks was accused of the attempted murder of his girlfriend's mother.
Following the investigation, Michael Starks was indicted on a murder charge for the death of Helmae Zewdu. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced charges of attempted murder and other offenses related to the first shooting. Starks was held without bail after his initial arraignment in district court.
