On the cold evening of January 8, 2008, in the city of Brockton, Massachusetts, a confrontation outside a liquor store turned fatal for 24-year-old Adilson Pires. That night, Pires, a male, entered the store with two companions. Inside, Shane Bester was making a purchase. Pires approached Bester and asked to speak with him outside, assuring him there would be no trouble.
Bester agreed and went outside to wait.
After Pires purchased two beers, he and his friends joined Bester in the parking lot. An argument quickly erupted between Pires and Bester. The source of their conflict was Pires's belief that Bester had stabbed him on a previous occasion, an accusation Bester denied. Though their voices were loud, witnesses described the exchange as not escalating to yelling. However, the tension between the two men was palpable, with Bester appearing visibly upset.
The verbal dispute tragically escalated to deadly violence when Bester suddenly drew a gun. From a distance of about five feet, he opened fire on Pires. The gunshots proved fatal for Adilson Pires. In the aftermath of the shooting, Shane Bester fled the scene, eventually making his way to Florida in an attempt to evade law enforcement. His flight from justice was short-lived, as he was apprehended by authorities just a few days later.
Shane Bester was brought back to Massachusetts to face charges for the death of Adilson Pires. Following a jury trial in Plymouth Superior Court, he was convicted of second-degree murder on January 17, 2010. For his crime, Bester was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. He also received a concurrent sentence for possession of a firearm without a license. After serving years of his sentence, Shane Bester was granted parole with conditions in March 2025.
