On the evening of October 7, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Brockton, Massachusetts neighborhood, leaving a 28-year-old Black / African American man, Christopher Gomes, dead from a gunshot wound. The tragic events began to unfold at approximately 5:45 p.m. when Gomes drove a silver SUV into the driveway of a residence on Taber Avenue. Moments later, a man identified as 32-year-old Kevin Serpa emerged from the house and fired a gun into the vehicle.
The SUV then rolled across the street and came to a stop. Serpa followed the vehicle, fired another shot into the driver's side window, and then retreated back inside his home.
Responding to 911 calls and a shot detection alert, Brockton Police officers arrived to find Gomes inside the SUV. As they investigated, they came under fire from a second-floor window of Serpa's residence. One officer was struck multiple times but survived his non-life-threatening injuries. This initiated a tense standoff that lasted for several hours, with Massachusetts State Police, including a STOP Team and crisis negotiators, establishing a perimeter in the densely populated area. Throughout the evening, negotiators were in contact with Serpa, who remained barricaded inside his home.
The standoff concluded at approximately 9:30 p.m. when Serpa exited the house and died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators later confirmed that the incident was not a random act of violence. While a motive for the shooting was not immediately released, the family of Christopher Gomes expressed their profound grief and confusion, stating they were unaware of any connection between him and Serpa. In the days that followed, family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember Gomes, who was described as a loving person who enjoyed playing soccer and spending time with his family. His obituary noted he was born in Brockton and left behind his parents, numerous siblings, and a companion.
