In the late afternoon of August 14, 2023, a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia claimed the life of 37-year-old Ikea Welsh, a mother of five. The incident unfolded shortly after 5 p.m. on the 6200 block of Glenmore Avenue, not far from her home.

Welsh was returning from her job as a home health aide, accompanied by her 15-year-old son, when gunfire erupted. Both Welsh and her son were struck. A 27-year-old woman who was a friend of Welsh was also injured in the shooting. Emergency services ...
