In the late afternoon of August 14, 2023, a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia claimed the life of 37-year-old Ikea Welsh, a mother of five. The incident unfolded shortly after 5 p.m. on the 6200 block of Glenmore Avenue, not far from her home.
Welsh was returning from her job as a home health aide, accompanied by her 15-year-old son, when gunfire erupted. Both Welsh and her son were struck. A 27-year-old woman who was a friend of Welsh was also injured in the shooting.
Emergency services transported all three victims to a local hospital, but Welsh succumbed to her injuries. Her son and her friend were treated for their injuries and were expected to recover.
Philadelphia police responded to the scene and were able to make an arrest in connection with the deadly shooting. A weapon was also recovered.
