In the early morning hours of September 16, 2025, a tragic and senseless act of violence claimed the life of 27-year-old Jasmine G. Johnson, a Black female, in Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. Johnson was standing on the front porch of a residence on the 3100 block of West Montgomery Avenue when she was caught in the crossfire of a shootout.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:19 a.m., shattering the quiet of the night with the sound of nearly two dozen gunshots.
Investigators believe that a shootout took place between at least two individuals using different caliber firearms, including a rifle and a semiautomatic handgun. Johnson, an innocent bystander, was struck in the back by a fatal gunshot. After being hit, she managed to run inside the house, where she collapsed on the living room floor. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Johnson was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m. The home, which was described as a rooming house where other people, including children, lived, was struck by multiple bullets. At least one bullet penetrated the front of the house and lodged in a first-floor wall. Another bullet went into a neighboring property. Miraculously, no one else was injured in the hail of gunfire.
Police recovered close to two dozen spent shell casings from both sides of the street, indicating the intensity of the exchange. Law enforcement officials have suggested that the intended targets of the shooting may have been a group of at least two men who were outside the home where Johnson was killed. Surveillance video of the shooting was obtained by police.
As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Jasmine Johnson, and authorities have not released a description of any suspects. The investigation into the homicide remains ongoing, with the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit leading the inquiry. A standing reward of up to $20,000 is being offered by the City of Philadelphia for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this tragic loss of life.
