In a tragic turn of events stemming from a domestic dispute, Richard Charles Cook Jr., a 40-year-old male, was fatally shot on Friday, September 24, 2021, in Phenix City, Alabama. The incident, which unfolded on U.S. Highway 80, also claimed the lives of 35-year-old Jessica Martin and her unborn child in what authorities have described as a triple murder and suicide.
Phenix City Police Department officers responded to a shooting call and discovered Cook deceased at the scene with
multiple gunshot wounds. Jessica Martin was found critically injured and was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Hospital, where she and her unborn child later died.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing a male suspect flee into a nearby wooded area. The man was later identified as 47-year-old Jeffrey Lynn Martin. Law enforcement, including the Russell County Sheriff's Department and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, established a perimeter around the woods.
A search of the area led to the discovery of Jeffrey Martin at a campsite, deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but it is believed to have originated from a domestic violence encounter.
