In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Selma, Alabama, the life of 24-year-old Cameron James Struggs was tragically cut short. On March 5, 2023, in the 100 block of Cummings Circle, gunfire erupted, leaving a scene of violence and loss. Struggs was found with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting claimed another life, that of 24-year-old Lakin Smith, who was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
A third individual, a 16-year-old female, was also wounded in the incident but her injuries were not considered life-threatening. The violence extended to property as well, with the vehicles of two other individuals, identified as 24-year-old Deonte Olds and 24-year-old Edrena Hawkins, also being shot into.
The Selma Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division moved swiftly in their investigation. Through witness accounts, detectives were able to identify a primary suspect. The day after the fatal shooting, on March 6, 2023, an arrest was made.
Twenty-two-year-old Micheal Latrell Brown was taken into custody and is now facing multiple serious charges. He has been charged with two counts of Capital Murder for the deaths of Struggs and Smith. Additionally, Brown faces two counts of Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Vehicle and one count of Assault in the second degree. He is currently being held in jail with no bond.
