In the early morning hours of June 2, 2020, the life of 48-year-old Christopher Murphy, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Selma, Alabama. Responding to reports of a shooting, police discovered Murphy on the 400 block of King Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Accounts from witnesses indicate that Murphy had been engaged in an argument with several individuals on the night he was killed.
The dispute escalated to violence when a man, whose face was obscured by a mask and who was wearing an orange shirt, reportedly shot Murphy while he was inside a vehicle. After being shot, Murphy managed to exit the car before collapsing. The assailant then reportedly stood over him and fired additional shots.
In the wake of the homicide, the investigation into Christopher Murphy's death has remained ongoing. Despite the witness accounts, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder. The case has remained unsolved for several years.
In an effort to generate new leads and bring justice for Murphy and his family, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced a $5,000 reward in February 2021 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. Graveside services for Murphy were held on June 13, 2020, at Lorenzo Harrison Memorial Gardens in Selma.
