In the quiet city of Selma, Alabama, a tragic event unfolded that cut short the life of 59-year-old Bill Jackson. On June 2, 2013, Jackson became a victim in a shocking double murder-suicide that also claimed the life of his stepdaughter. The perpetrator was an off-duty Selma police officer who then turned the gun on himself.
The incident began to unfold around 12:10 p.m. on a Sunday at a residence in the 2400 block of Springdale Street.
It was there that Selma police officer Dwight Moorer, a five-year veteran of the force and an Iraq war veteran with two tours of service, confronted his 28-year-old ex-girlfriend, Keoshia L. Hill. Moorer shot and killed Hill, leaving her in the driveway next to a white car.
The violence did not end there. Moorer then proceeded to the 300 block of 10th Street, where he encountered Bill Jackson, Hill's stepfather. Moorer fatally shot Jackson before returning to the initial scene on Springdale Street. Inside the white car, Moorer took his own life, bringing a grim end to the devastating chain of events.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation was called in to handle the case, which was quickly determined to be a murder-suicide. The motive appeared to stem from the recent end of the relationship between Moorer and Hill. The community and the Selma Police Department were left stunned and deeply saddened by the actions of one of their own. Selma's Chief of Police, William T. Riley, expressed the department's profound hurt and devastation over the incident, lamenting the loss of life and the fact that a police officer was the perpetrator. As the perpetrator died by suicide, there were no subsequent arrests or trial.
