In the early morning hours of March 19, 2023, the life of 19-year-old Gerald Jermaine Johnson Jr., a Black male, was tragically cut short in his native city of Selma, Alabama. Johnson, who was residing in Tuscaloosa, was in the 1800 block of Alabama Highway 14 East when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m.
Emergency services transported Johnson to a local hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The Selma Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. In the initial stages of their inquiry, law enforcement officials stated that they had not yet determined a motive for the killing.
In the wake of the shooting, both the Selma Police Department and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office made public appeals for assistance. They urged anyone with information regarding the death of Gerald Jermaine Johnson to come forward to aid in the investigation.
