In the early hours of April 15, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Jabbori Demetrius Yelding, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. The teenager was fatally shot at the Arbor Pointe Apartments on Dairy Road in Prichard, Alabama, a city within Mobile County. Responding officers discovered Yelding with gunshot wounds at approximately 2 a.m.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Yelding's death moved forward when, just two days later, on April 17, 2023, 31-year-old Kevin Jerome Gardner turned himself in to the authorities. Gardner was subsequently charged with the murder of Jabbori Yelding. While an arrest has been made, the Prichard Police Department has stated that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Preliminary information suggests that the fatal incident may have stemmed from an altercation.
The community mourned the loss of the young man, with funeral services held on April 29, 2023, at Small's Mortuary in Mobile. He was laid to rest at Whispering Pines Cemetery in Eight Mile, Alabama. The case against Kevin Gardner is proceeding through the justice system as the investigation continues to unfold the full circumstances of that tragic night.
