Jamil Autry, a 13-year-old Black male, was in his bed at his home in Mobile, Alabama, on the night of October 3, 2022, when his life was tragically taken. Just before 11 p.m., a single gunshot was fired inside the residence on Jones Lane. The bullet struck Jamil in the right chest. Paramedics rushed him to a local hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.
Prosecutors later stated that the evidence indicated the boy was likely asleep when he was shot.
The investigation into the shooting led police to arrest Jamil’s mother, 53-year-old Glenda Marie Agee. She was charged with reckless murder. During a bond hearing, which a judge denied, a prosecutor explained that the charge signified an "extreme indifference to human life" and did not require proving intent to kill. The prosecutor also noted that the investigation had uncovered information about Agee's "pattern and practice of how she uses firearms."
Family and friends gathered for a vigil and balloon release to remember Jamil, who had attended Mobile County Training School. His sister, Tiffany Epps, described her little brother as fun, energetic, and loving. While mourning the boy’s death, family members stood by his mother, insisting the shooting was a tragic accident. They described Agee as a loving mother who was also hurting deeply. Her sister, Gwendolyn Payne, said, "He loved his mama. She loved him, too... She would never hurt him."
Court records and police reports revealed a troubled history. Glenda Agee had a criminal record that included charges of assault and domestic violence. At the time of her son’s death, she was out on bond for an alleged assault on a police officer earlier that year. Officials also confirmed that police had been called to her residence 34 times in the two years leading up to the shooting.
Agee initially pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. The case concluded in February 2025, when Glenda Marie Agee pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with her son's fatal shooting.
