In the early morning hours of June 7, 2021, a grim discovery was made on a Mobile, Alabama street. The bodies of 20-year-old Doreon Howard, a Black male, and 21-year-old Joshua Womble were found lying in the roadway at the intersection of Betbeze and Mobile Streets. Both men had sustained apparent gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators with the Mobile Police Department quickly determined that the double homicide was not a random act of violence.
Evidence gathered at the scene suggested that Howard and Womble had been specifically targeted. The investigation into the targeted killings moved forward, seeking to uncover the motive behind the violent deaths of the two young men.
Their efforts led to the arrests of two individuals in connection with the murders. Barbara Morrissette, 44 years old at the time, and 49-year-old Kenneth L. Mays were taken into custody. Both Morrissette and Mays were subsequently charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Doreon Howard and Joshua Womble. The investigation into the circumstances that led to the shooting remains ongoing.
