In the early hours of April 14, 2015, a sense of unease settled over the 2000 block of Eagle Drive in Mobile, Alabama. It was here that Marlo Demetrius Derks, a 38-year-old man, found his life hanging by a thread after being shot in the leg. First responders rushed to the scene at approximately 2:20 a.m., finding Derks wounded. He was quickly transported to Springhill Medical Center by Mobile Fire Rescue, but despite their efforts, the injury proved to be fatal, and he died at the hospital.
The investigation into the shooting that claimed Marlo Derks' life moved swiftly. The day after the incident, on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, Homicide Detectives with the Mobile Police Department made a significant breakthrough in the case. They brought in 20-year-old Irie Pickett for questioning. Following that interview, Pickett was taken into custody and formally charged with Manslaughter in connection with Derks' death. The arrest marked a swift response from law enforcement in the city's sixth homicide of that year.
