In the spring of 2014, the life of 20-year-old Hassan DeWayne Johnson was tragically cut short in Mobile, Alabama. On the afternoon of May 18th, Johnson was in a vehicle on Webb Avenue when he was shot in the abdomen. He was rushed to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and died from blood loss on May 19, 2014.
The Mobile Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the shooting.
Investigators determined the incident occurred in the 2100 block of Webb Avenue. Police initially described the suspect as a Black male with a light complexion and low-cut hair, who was wearing a dark shirt and dark jeans and was armed with a gun. The search for the person responsible for Johnson's death extended beyond the borders of Alabama.
Less than a month later, an arrest was made in the case. On June 11, 2014, Derrick Davis was taken into custody in Chicago, Illinois, on a separate and unrelated harassment complaint. During his arrest, Chicago officers discovered an outstanding murder warrant for Davis in connection with the death of Hassan Johnson. Davis waived extradition and was set to be returned to Mobile to face the murder charge. Following this development, the Mobile Police Department considered the case cleared by arrest.
