On a tragic evening in Mobile, Alabama, 31-year-old Matthew Chase Richardson was fatally shot on November 7, 2022. The male victim had gone to a residence on Bryant Street to help his sister during a domestic dispute. The incident that led to his death began earlier that day and escalated when he arrived.
The preliminary investigation revealed that 20-year-old Zackery Hannah had been in an altercation with his ex-girlfriend, who was Richardson's sister.
Detectives testified that Hannah had punched and choked his ex-girlfriend. When Richardson arrived to help his sister move her belongings from a shed, an altercation ensued between him and Hannah. Hannah allegedly pointed a gun at his ex-girlfriend, but it jammed. Richardson then confronted Hannah, who subsequently shot and killed him.
After the shooting, Hannah fled the scene with a shotgun into a wooded area in the Glen Acres community. This initiated a manhunt, during which Hannah engaged in multiple shootouts with Mobile Police officers. In one of these exchanges, an officer was shot in both legs. Hannah was eventually shot multiple times by police and apprehended with the assistance of a K-9 unit. He was then transported to a local hospital for his injuries.
Following his release from the hospital, Zackery Hannah was taken into custody and booked into the Mobile Metro Jail. He faced a litany of charges, including murder, seven counts of attempted murder, and shooting into an occupied vehicle. In October 2025, Hannah pleaded guilty to nine felonies. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his crimes.
