In the early morning hours of November 21, 2021, a burst of gunfire on Rangeline Road in Mobile, Alabama, ended the lives of two men from Mississippi. Dwan Williams, a 23-year-old Black male, and 36-year-old Andre Carter were found deceased inside a vehicle, both having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The two had been returning home after Williams, an aspiring rapper, had performed at a nightclub in Prichard.
Their journey was tragically cut short when another vehicle pulled alongside theirs, and its occupants opened fire.
For nearly two years, the double homicide remained a cold case, leaving the families of Williams and Carter in a painful state of uncertainty. Investigators worked to piece together the events of that night, with surveillance footage offering a crucial but incomplete picture. The video showed the victims' SUV making a U-turn before stopping, and then three individuals were seen exiting the vehicle and walking away. This suggested that others were present at the time of the shooting and may have fled the scene. Family members clung to hope that those responsible would be brought to justice, all the while grappling with the sudden and violent loss of their loved ones.
A significant breakthrough in the investigation came in October 2023 with the arrest of Ardis Prez, 28, in California. He was extradited to Mobile and charged with two counts of murder and two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. The following month, a second suspect, 33-year-old Keith Richmond of Inglewood, California, was also apprehended and faced the same charges. The arrests, coming almost two years after the crime, brought a wave of relief to the victims' families, who expressed their gratitude for the persistent efforts of law enforcement.
The legal process culminated in February 2025. In a Mobile County courtroom, a jury found Ardis Prez guilty on two counts of murder. On the same day as the verdict, his co-defendant, Keith Richmond, pleaded guilty to the murders and to shooting into an occupied vehicle. These convictions marked the conclusion of a lengthy and arduous quest for justice for Dwan Williams and Andre Carter, finally holding accountable the men responsible for their untimely deaths.
