In the late summer of 2018, a domestic dispute in Mobile, Alabama, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of an innocent young man. John Law, a 20-year-old Black male, was unwittingly caught in the crossfire of a volatile situation that had nothing to do with him. On August 25th, what began as a confrontation between Mary Ann Harris-Robinson and her ex-boyfriend would ultimately end with Law’s untimely death.
The series of events leading to the fatal shooting began when
Harris-Robinson and her former partner became embroiled in an argument at her residence. The heated exchange did not end there; instead, it spilled out onto the streets of Mobile. Harris-Robinson pursued her ex-boyfriend in her vehicle, and during this chase, she discharged a firearm. A bullet from her gun struck John Law, who was a passenger in the car with her ex-boyfriend. He was not involved in the domestic dispute and was merely a bystander in a perilous situation. The gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and John Law died at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement quickly identified Mary Ann Harris-Robinson as the alleged perpetrator. She was subsequently arrested and faced the gravest of charges: capital murder. The case then moved through the legal system, and in June of the following year, a Mobile County Grand Jury handed down an indictment against Harris-Robinson for capital murder, solidifying the legal battle to come and setting her bond at $75,000. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man with a future ahead of him, a life cut short by a conflict in which he played no part.
