Justin Jamal Mooney, a 29-year-old male, was killed on October 20, 2018, in Mobile, Alabama. An employee of the City of Mobile for over ten years, Mooney was standing in his mother's driveway when he was struck by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting. He was an unintended target in an incident that also left two other people injured.
The subsequent investigation led to the arrests of two individuals, Patrick Johnson and Miles Caples.
Both were charged in connection with the triple shooting. Prosecutors stated that Johnson and Caples fired into a vehicle in the Birdville community, with one of the fifteen bullets fired striking and killing the innocent bystander.
Patrick Johnson was convicted for his role in the fatal shooting and is currently serving a life sentence. Miles Caples, who was seventeen years old at the time of the incident, faced charges of capital murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle. After spending more than four years in jail awaiting trial, a jury found Miles Caples not guilty on all charges in February 2023, and he was acquitted.
