On a cold December day in 1982, a 29-year-old mother of four named Barbara Jane Shumac disappeared from her home in Venango Township, a quiet corner of Erie County, Pennsylvania. The date was December 16th, and what began as a day with the simple plan of cutting down a Christmas tree ended in a mystery that would span decades. That morning, an argument had taken place between Barbara and her husband. Sometime between the hours of noon and 2:00 p.m., she walked away from their residence on Kimball Road. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a dark blue snowmobile suit, and blue and gray snow boots. Barbara left behind a note for her husband, expressing her love and apologizing for making his life difficult. The words, "It really hurts me inside to do this, but I didn't see any other way," offered a glimpse into her state of mind. Along with Barbara, a .22 caliber rifle was also missing from the home. Crucially, she left behind all of her personal belongings, including her purse, keys, and car, suggesting she did not intend to travel far or be gone for long. Her husband reported her missing to the Pennsylvania State Police at 5:00 p.m. that same day. An immediate search was launched, but a severe snowstorm hampered the efforts, erasing any potential tracks she may have left behind. Years turned into decades with no sign of Barbara. The official search may have been thwarted by the weather, but the search for answers by her loved ones never ceased. Tragically, Barbara had a history of mental health challenges and had previously attempted suicide. In 1990, eight years after she vanished, Barbara Shumac was declared legally dead. Her four children have been left to wonder what happened to their mother, holding onto the hope for closure. The case remains unsolved, a lingering question in the community and a source of enduring pain for her family. The Pennsylvania State Police continue to list her as a missing person, the circumstances of her disappearance a cold case that awaits a breakthrough.
