In the small community of Garrett, Kentucky, a tragic event unfolded on the morning of October 18, 2020, ending the life of 45-year-old Denver Patrick Jr. On that Sunday, at approximately 10:54 A.M., Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard received a distressing call regarding a shooting on Babe Bolen Drive.
The call came from Travis Short, 29, of Garrett, who informed dispatchers that he had shot his uncle, Denver Patrick Jr., and another individual, 68-year-old Edna Patrick. When troopers and detectives arrived at the scene, they discovered that Short had fired multiple shots at Denver Patrick, inflicting fatal wounds. The Knott County Coroner's Office pronounced Denver Patrick Jr. deceased at the residence.
Edna Patrick also sustained a gunshot wound during the incident and was transported by Lifeguard Ambulance Service for medical treatment; she was reported to be in stable condition. Travis Short was arrested at the scene and lodged at the Kentucky River Regional Jail. He was charged with murder, first-degree assault, and tampering with physical evidence. The investigation into the deadly shooting was handled by Detective Robbie Dials of the Kentucky State Police.
