On January 11, 2018, the life of 21-year-old Theron Bennekin Jr., a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Mobile, Alabama. The young man was a lifelong resident of the city, known for his humor and loving spirit. That day, he was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle on South Leeds Avenue in Prichard, a city in Mobile County.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Bennekin succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family and friends to grapple with the sudden and violent loss.
The Prichard Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into Bennekin's death, which was the city's first of the new year. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, LeCharles Mixon Jr. Within a short period, Mixon was apprehended and taken into custody. The investigation suggested that the shooting may have stemmed from an argument between Bennekin and Mixon, escalating to a fatal encounter.
Following his arrest, LeCharles Mixon Jr. was charged with the murder of Theron Bennekin Jr. He was subsequently booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail. The legal process began to unfold as the case moved through the court system. After being indicted by a grand jury, Mixon faced a trial for the murder of Theron Bennekin Jr.
During the trial, the prosecution presented its case, laying out the evidence gathered during the investigation to the jury. The defense, in turn, argued on behalf of Mixon. After hearing all the testimony and reviewing the evidence, the jury found LeCharles Mixon Jr. guilty of the murder of Theron Bennekin Jr. Consequently, he was convicted of the crime and sentenced to serve time in prison for his role in the young man's untimely death.
