On a Friday night in March 2019, a dispute over a forty-dollar dice game in Mobile, Alabama, escalated into deadly violence, claiming the lives of two men. Carlos Cunningham, a 27-year-old male, and Willecious “Willie” Moffett, aged 38, were fatally shot on Dolphin Island Parkway. The argument reportedly began during a gambling game at an apartment, quickly spiraling out of control.
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities identified two brothers, Cedric and Jerome Williams, as
the primary suspects. Both men had prior criminal records, with Cedric having faced multiple drug and domestic violence charges, while Jerome had several nonviolent offenses on his record. Following an investigation, both brothers were arrested and charged with murder in connection with the deaths of Cunningham and Moffett. One of the brothers was also wounded during the altercation.
The legal proceedings that followed culminated in a trial that concluded in November 2024 with a split verdict from the jury. Jerome Williams was convicted of the murder of Willecious Moffett but was found not guilty in the death of Carlos Cunningham. His brother, Cedric Williams, was acquitted of Moffett's murder but was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter in the death of Carlos Cunningham. During the trial, Cedric Williams' defense attorney argued that his client had acted in self-defense after being shot first. The prosecution contended that Moffett was attempting to flee the scene in a vehicle when he was fatally shot. Following the verdict, the district attorney's office indicated its intent to seek the maximum possible sentences for both brothers.
