In the early afternoon of June 9, 2021, the life of 21-year-old LeQuintae Carroll, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Mobile, Alabama. Responding to a call about a male down at the South of Dauphin Apartments around 2:25 p.m., Mobile Police Department officers made a grim discovery. Inside his own apartment, they found Carroll, who had sustained apparent gunshot wounds.
Medical personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene, turning a quiet Wednesday afternoon into the setting of a homicide investigation.
The day following the discovery of Carroll's body, a significant development occurred in the case. A 25-year-old man named Deonte Hughes voluntarily surrendered to authorities at the Mobile police headquarters. His decision to turn himself in brought a swift turn to the investigation. Following his surrender, the Mobile Police Department charged Hughes with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of LeQuintae Carroll.
The homicide was investigated by the Mobile Police Department's Homicide Unit. Hughes' arrest marked a resolution in the case, which was one of 51 homicides recorded in Mobile in 2021. The department reported a high clearance rate for that year, with 44 of the cases being solved.
