In the afternoon hours of June 15, 1943, Mobile Police Department Officer Ollie Mason, a 49-year-old male, was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance call on South Hamilton Street. The call concerned a 54-year-old man who had beaten his wife and three of his children and had then barricaded himself inside his garage.
As Officer Mason and his partner approached the garage, the suspect opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Mason.
The officers were able to return fire, seriously injuring the suspect. Officer Mason had served with the Mobile Police Department for four years and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having fought in World War I. He was survived by his wife and four children.
The suspect was taken into custody and was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the killing of Officer Mason.
