On April 18, 1985, Corporal Julius Schulte, a 22-year veteran of the Mobile Police Department, responded to a call regarding a missing child at 1058 Etta Avenue in Mobile, Alabama. Upon arrival, he discovered that the child had returned home, but became involved in a domestic dispute between Cheryl Green and her ex-boyfriend, Vernon Madison. Green had ended her relationship with Madison and was in the process of moving out when Madison arrived, leading to a confrontation.
