Officer Edward P. DeFord of the Mobile Police Department in Alabama was fatally shot while performing his duties on October 30, 1935. At the time, he and his partner were escorting non-union workers across picket lines during the Gulf Coast Longshoreman's strike near the Port of Mobile. This strike was a significant labor dispute, and the tensions were high, leading to violent confrontations.
