In the spring of 2023, the life of Ariel Cae Jones, a 31-year-old female, was tragically cut short. On April 18, her body was discovered inside an abandoned blue sedan that had been left in a field in Birmingham, Alabama's East Lake neighborhood. An autopsy would later reveal the horrifying details of her death; she had been shot and her body was subsequently burned.
The initial discovery launched a homicide investigation as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to such a violent end.
For months, the case progressed while her family grieved a devastating loss. Investigators diligently followed leads, and their efforts eventually connected Ariel's case to another remarkably similar and disturbing homicide. Another woman, Jermiera Fowler, was found shot and burned on June 1st in the Roebuck area. As police delved into Fowler's murder, a single suspect emerged: 25-year-old Demarcus Mincey. Through their investigation into Fowler's death, detectives were able to link Mincey to the murder of Ariel Jones as well.
The breakthrough in the case came on June 22, 2023, when Demarcus Mincey was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Stonecrest, Georgia. He was initially jailed there on unrelated charges of cruelty to children, aggravated assault, and battery. In connection with the Alabama cases, authorities secured a capital murder warrant for Mincey in the death of Ariel Jones and warrants for murder and abuse of a corpse in the death of Jermiera Fowler. Following his arrest, Mincey requested legal counsel and awaited extradition back to Birmingham to face the charges. Police have stated that the only known connection between the two female victims was the suspect.
