On a summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 36-year-old Sikeisha Lanette Mitchell, a Black female, was tragically cut short. On August 4, 2018, police responded to a call of a shooting at her Southside apartment located at 909 23rd Street South. Upon arrival, officers discovered Mitchell unresponsive, having sustained a gunshot wound to her head.
Despite the efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations into the shooting were uncertain, with authorities trying to determine if the gunshot was accidental or intentional. However, as detectives delved deeper into the case, it became evident that a domestic argument had taken place before the fatal shot was fired. This revelation shifted the focus of the investigation, and ultimately, Sikeisha Mitchell's death was officially ruled a homicide. The investigation progressed quickly as witnesses were identified and provided information to the authorities.
Within two days of the incident, a suspect was taken into custody. On August 6, 2018, the Birmingham Police Department announced the arrest of Anthony Needham, the 37-year-old boyfriend of Sikeisha Mitchell. He was subsequently charged with murder in connection with her death. Needham was booked into the Jefferson County Jail, with his bond set at $100,000.
