Cheyanne Maria Wilson was a 30-year-old Black woman from Birmingham, Alabama, who was remembered for being funny and kind. A mother of two, she had attended Woodlawn school and was living in Birmingham at the time of her death.
On the night of Thursday, August 11, 2022, a wave of violence struck the city's west side. Around 10:30 p.m., police responded to a home in the 2000 block of 20th Place West in the Ensley neighborhood. Inside, they discovered Cheyanne shot to death.
A second victim, 41-year-old Reginald Jerome Reynolds, was found shot and killed outside the residence, across the street. Investigators believed the double homicide was the result of a domestic incident. The killings were the first in a series of shootings that left three people dead in Ensley within a 30-minute span.
Police believed a single suspect was responsible for shooting both Cheyanne and Reginald before fleeing the scene. The Birmingham Police Department's East Precinct Task Force quickly developed a lead on a person of interest and their vehicle. Officers soon spotted the car on John Rogers Drive at Alton Road and initiated a traffic stop.
The driver was identified as Curtis Humphry, a 31-year-old man from the nearby city of Leeds. He was taken into custody and brought to Birmingham Police Headquarters, where he was questioned by homicide detectives. Police later confirmed that Humphry had been in a relationship with Cheyanne.
After reviewing the evidence presented by investigators, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office obtained a warrant for Humphry's arrest. He was subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of Cheyanne Wilson and Reginald Reynolds. As of the filing of these charges in August 2022, Humphry was being held in jail with no bond while the case proceeds through the legal system.
