In the small town of Grove Hill, Alabama, a gathering of men on Ezell Street, near Wilson Hall Middle School, took a tragic turn on the evening of May 11, 2023. During the encounter at a residence, gunfire erupted, shattering the peace and leaving two individuals shot. One of the victims was 36-year-old Quarwon Na'Eem Pendleton, a male resident of Grove Hill.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Pendleton was swiftly transported to Grove Hill Memorial Hospital in a desperate
attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Reports indicated that Pendleton had sustained three gunshot wounds. A second man, a 32-year-old from Pascagoula, Mississippi, was also wounded in the shooting.
In the wake of the violence, law enforcement launched an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. A fellow Grove Hill man, Lawaun Belvince Hill Jr., was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder for the death of Quarwon Pendleton and assault in connection with the injuries to the second victim.
The legal process moved forward, and in September 2023, the case was presented to a Clarke County grand jury. After reviewing the evidence, the grand jury returned an indictment against Lawaun Belvince Hill Jr. for the murder of Quarwon Na'Eem Pendleton, solidifying the charges against him and setting the stage for future court proceedings.
