In the heat of a Birmingham, Alabama morning on Friday, June 21, 2024, a violent encounter unfolded that resulted in the death of 34-year-old Rufus Jermaine Brock. The incident, which police believe was a targeted and premeditated robbery attempt, took place around 11 a.m. at the Oak Tree Apartments in the city's Avondale community. Brock, a resident of Birmingham, and another individual, both concealed by black nylon masks despite the 90-degree weather, allegedly confronted a person with the
intent to rob them.
The chaotic scene escalated quickly, with at least 13 shots fired. In a turn of events, the intended victim of the robbery was armed and defended himself, shooting both of the masked men. When authorities arrived at the 4400 block of Fifth Avenue South, they found Rufus Jermaine Brock deceased in the parking lot, lying next to a work van and still wearing his mask. The second suspect was also shot and initially reported to be dead at the scene. However, he was later revived by medical personnel at UAB Hospital. The individual who was the target of the alleged robbery sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the shootout.
The Birmingham Police Department's investigation into the incident is ongoing. While the identity of the second suspect has not been publicly released, his condition following his revival at the hospital remains unknown. There have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or charges filed in connection with the incident.
