In the summer of 2023, the life of a bright and happy 3-year-old Black male named Kayden Dmitri Goldman was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. On June 30, Kayden was at home when he found a loaded gun and accidentally shot himself. Emergency services rushed the young boy to a local children's hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. At the time of the incident, adults were present in the house, although Kayden was reportedly alone in a room when the tragedy occurred.
Kayden was
described by his mother as an intelligent and independent child who loved dinosaurs and had dreams of playing soccer. He was known for his happy demeanor and his ability to light up a room. His family remembers him as a sweet and lovable child who enjoyed learning his ABCs, numbers, and colors.
In the wake of the devastating event, an investigation was launched by the Birmingham police. A couple of weeks after his son's death, Stephen D'Mitri Goldman, Kayden's father, was arrested. Charging documents stated that he had recklessly caused his son's death by leaving a loaded firearm within the sight and reach of the unattended toddler.
Subsequently, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted the 25-year-old father on a charge of reckless manslaughter. Following his initial arrest, Goldman was released on bond and is currently awaiting further legal proceedings.
