Pravin Raojibhai Patel, a 76-year-old Indian-origin man, had been a familiar and friendly face in Sheffield, Alabama, for over four decades. As the owner and operator of the Hillcrest Motel, he was known for being a kind, jolly, and dedicated family man. His life, however, came to a tragic and abrupt end on the morning of February 8, 2024, during a confrontation at the very business he had run for so long.
On that Thursday morning, a man named William Jeremy Moore, 34, approached the motel seeking to rent a room. An altercation ensued between Moore and Patel. According to court documents, Patel attempted to get Moore to leave the property before the situation escalated. Instead of departing, Moore pulled out a handgun and shot the elderly motel owner multiple times in the face and chest. A barber working across the street heard three consecutive gunshots and ran over to find the tragic scene unfolding.
The search for the suspect was brief. Sheffield police quickly apprehended Moore as he was attempting to break into a nearby abandoned house. A search of Moore revealed the murder weapon in his possession. He was taken into custody and held in the Sheffield City Jail before being transferred to the Colbert County Jail. The local community and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association expressed deep sadness and outrage over the senseless act of violence that took the life of the long-standing businessman.
In March 2024, a grand jury indicted William Jeremy Moore for the death of Pravin Patel. His trial began in October 2025. Prosecutors presented evidence that included surveillance footage of the shooting. After two days of testimony, the jury found Moore guilty of murder. During the sentencing, Patel's daughter confronted her father's killer, stating that he had 'annihilated the foundation of our entire family' and 'turned our lives into a permanent crime scene.' William Jeremy Moore was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder.
