On February 8, 2024, 76-year-old Pravin Raojibhai Patel, owner of the Hillcrest Motel in Sheffield, Alabama, was fatally shot during an altercation with a prospective guest. The incident began when 34-year-old William Jeremy Moore arrived at the motel seeking to rent a room. A confrontation ensued, during which Patel reportedly asked Moore to leave the property multiple times. Moore initially began to comply but then turned and shot Patel twice in the chest, resulting in his death.
