On August 7, 2021, 42-year-old Jerry Karl Ricks of Sheffield, Alabama, was fatally shot while driving near the intersection of Southeast 17th Street and Avalon Avenue in Sheffield. Responding to reports of an accident, police discovered Ricks' vehicle had veered off the road into a wooded area. Upon investigation, officers found two bullet holes in the windshield, one of which had struck Ricks in the head, leading to his death.
