On the night of April 12, 2024, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 18-year-old Jacob Crumpton was fatally shot during what authorities believe was an attempted robbery. The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. on Reece Boulevard, culminating in the vehicle Crumpton was driving crashing into a house. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered both Crumpton and another male, 17-year-old Carderrius Murry, inside the car, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Crumpton, who was behind the wheel, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Murry was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries. Investigators have indicated that the shooting stemmed from an attempted robbery. It has been suggested by authorities that one of the two victims was the intended target of the robbery, while the other was considered a suspect in the incident.
In the wake of the shooting, a juvenile suspect, who was reportedly an acquaintance of Crumpton, was taken into custody. That individual has since been charged with two counts of felony murder and one count of robbery in connection with the deaths of both Crumpton and Murry.
Jacob Crumpton, who would have turned 19 in November of that year, was remembered by his mother, Jalena Chambliss, as a 'big ball of energy' who was 'lovable' and 'all about family.' He was the father of a three-month-old daughter at the time of his death. Funeral services for Crumpton were held on April 26, 2024, at Porter St. Paul C.M.E. Church, with his burial following at Cedar Oak Memorial Park.
