In the quiet moments of a Sunday evening in Louisville, Kentucky, seven-year-old Dequante Hobbs Jr. was inside his home, enjoying a piece of cake and playing on his iPad. It was May 21, 2017, and what should have been a peaceful end to the day turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy. A single stray bullet pierced through the window of his family's residence on West Madison Street, striking the young boy in the neck and ending his life.
