In the autumn of 2021, a tragedy unfolded in the Shively suburb of Louisville, Kentucky, forever altering the lives of two families. On the evening of October 7th, 36-year-old Craig Lee Tolbert, a Black male, found himself at the Ramser Court apartments off Dixie Highway. It was there that he crossed paths with 28-year-old Michael Young, who was in a state of deep distress.
Witnesses, including Young's own family, later recounted that he had recently been released from the hospital and was exhibiting paranoid behavior, even threatening to harm himself with a handgun he had acquired from his mother.
Concerned for Young's well-being, Tolbert approached him in an attempt to de-escalate the volatile situation. He spoke to Young, trying to talk him out of taking his own life. In a sudden and devastating turn of events, as Tolbert stood near the front door of an apartment, Young fired the gun. The bullet struck Tolbert, inflicting a fatal wound. He was rushed to University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. In the immediate aftermath, Young fled the scene, discarding the handgun on a nearby deck before he was apprehended by police in the backyard of a home on Ralph Avenue.
Following his arrest, Michael Young was charged with murder. During questioning, he admitted to having consumed several pills in the two days leading up to the shooting. He confessed to putting the gun to his own head and ultimately firing the shot in Tolbert's direction. Despite expressing remorse for his actions, his bond was set at one million dollars. The community was left to mourn the loss of Craig Tolbert, a man remembered for his peaceful nature and his selfless final act of compassion.
